Does anyone want to help celebrate the new year with a puzzle? I made it up myself!

Which of these shapes can't be drawn without picking your pen up from the page or retracing any lines?



It's okay if you cross over a line you already made, but if you've got it all right you shouldn't need to.

Don't tell anyone else your answer! I'm not going to give it away to everyone either.

[meanwhile he still needs things like a real place to live and such. Does that matter in the face of puzzles? ...Well, yes, actually. Luke's a fan, but not a maniac. He just doesn't know anyone well enough to think of living with them, or asking. Or...anything.

You're really close! What's different about shape B?

Um... the inside design doesn't touch the outline around the edge? It only joins up with the lines that go inwards.

But if I gave you this one instead, you could do it without retracing any lines.



You would have to cross a few, though.

The line down the middle. In the first picture, it splits in two, and you can't draw both. Right?

You're right, you can't. I suppose that's sort of how it works.

Huh... that's pretty neat! [He grins.] What other puzzles do you know? I collect some of them, now! Things like these. [Holding it up to the journal, now.]

What's that? [He's seen similar things before, the horseshoes are throwing him.]

I know a lot of puzzles. That's what happens when you're Layton's apprentice. [/PROUD]

It's another type of puzzle! You've gotta get the ring off. [He slides it back and forth on its chains - yeah, it's definitely not going over the horseshoes.] Who's Layton?

Professor Layton is practically famous for solving puzzles! [And, you know, archaeology.] And I'm his apprentice!

Oh - right! He's a kind of teacher? What do you do as an apprentice?

I help him solve puzzles!

[He does a bit more than that, but he's no archaeology apprentice.]

Oh - I guess that makes sense! [He grins a little.] You must know a whole lot.
